Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators
When adding or subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, you will need to make it so that the numbers have like denominators.
Steps:
Find the least common denominator (LCD) of both denominators by listing multiples and selecting the smallest common multiple.
Change the fractions to equivalent fractions with the LCD as the new denominator.
Add or subtract the new fractions with a common denominator.
Simplify.
Multiplying Fractions
You will only need to multiply a fraction with a whole number. You can create a picture, or solve it algebraically.
When multiplying fractions algebraically:
Write the whole number as a fraction over one (any number divided by one is itself- so you are not changing its value).
Multiply the numerators.
Multiply the denominators.
Simplify;

Dividing with Unit Fractions
You will need to create a picture to represent the division.
Dividing Whole Numbers by Unit Fractions
Dividing Unit Fractions by Whole Numbers
In 5th grade, you will only need to divide using unit fractions, or only fractions with a numerator of 1.
