Equivalent fractions are fractions that are equal in value. You can find equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing BOTH the numerator and the denominator by the SAME number.
Simplest Form
All solutions, when you are completing fraction operations, need to be in simplest form. Simplest form is a type of equivalent fraction, where the numerator and denominator are the smallest possible digits.
To put a fraction in simplest form (example 12/30):
Find the greatest common factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator (the greatest common factor of 12 and 30 is 6).
Divide both the numerator and the denominator by the GCF (12 divided by 6 is 2, 30 divided by 6 is 5, so the simplest form is 2/5).
Improper Fractions vs. Mixed Numbers
Improper Fractions fractions whose numerators are greater than their denominators
Examples: 7/5, 3/2, 30/18
Mixed Numbers combination of fractions and whole numbers
Examples: 1 2/3, 4 1/5
Sometimes you will need to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number (after completing an operation and you need to simplify your answer) or convert a mixed number to an improper fraction (when you need to add/subtract fractions).
